New Victorinox INOX Carbon

The Victorinox INOX has become one of the best selling watches in their line because it is the most indestructible watch on the market today. The watch case for all models except the new Carbon is made from a solid block of steel, plus the case back comes from the same mold so it fits together seamlessly. The sapphire crystal is recessed to reduce risk of chips or breakage. The standard rubber strap is a little stiff, but stretches tremendously so it will still be comfortable on the wrist.

The crown is protected on all sides so it would be difficult to break off, even if you do not screw it in all the way. The watch is a standard 3 hand timepiece with superluminova on the hands and markers so you will have no trouble seeing it in any low light situation, even if it only lasts a few hours. The Victorinox Inox has come in a variety of colors including black, blue, red, yellow, green, and grey and is available on rubber, leather, paracord, and steel bracelet. There’s even a diver model in the same colors so they definitely have every variation you could want.

Now the Victorinox INOX is available in a carbon model with gift set. This carbon composite case is much lighter than the steel cases the rest of the line have, and it really has the very cool military look to it. It comes on a paracord, but included in the gift set is an extra rubber strap so you can interchange them yourself. The deep grey almost black dial is accented with a red seconds hand and a red 24 hour track ring printed right onto the sapphire crystal. I don’t really understand the need for the 24 hour track ring on the crystal since it isn’t a GMT, but I think it just adds to the military look and feel.

The paracord strap has a story itself. Victorinox made the band so that it is a fully functional paracord, and if you need to use it in the woods, or….in Kabul, you can send your story into them and they will replace your strap at no cost.

Each piece also comes with the standard bumper for extra protection so as not to scratch your watch, but the carbon case won’t really show that just by the nature of the material.

This piece is only available on the Victorinox website, or in select retailers around the country. (Saltzman’s Watches is YOUR neighborhood service center and dealer so you KNOW we have it now!) It is $950, a bit more expensive than the regular steel I.N.O.X., but the carbon case, and extra strap really show the value and where your money is going. This piece is ridiculously durable based on the tests they put it through, like driving over it with a tank, and freezing it in a block of ice, and spilling acid on it, and now the carbon case is completely heat resistant.

It is water resistant to 200 meters, and takes a lithium long life battery so you don’t need to compromise the water resistance for the battery change every year. This battery should last you 8-10 years.

To sum up, this is an extremely cool looking watch that holds up to the rigors of an active lifestyle. Come in and see it at either location (Cranston or Newport) or call us and we can help you with any questions you have!

Shopping small doesn’t mean you can’t shop online

Yesterday was the official start to the holiday season, and today is Small Business Saturday. For those of you that do not know, #SmallBusinessSaturday is an initiative started and promoted by American Express to get people to spend a day shopping at your local businesses.

I know a lot of you are still tired from your late night Black Friday shopping and you might not have it in you to do more shopping today, but ANY small business counts! Your dry cleaner, local Dunkin Donuts, local restaurants, and of course your local retailers all count as small businesses.

You also might want to do your shopping online this year because it’s hard to get into stores, and that’s great because so many of us (local business owners) have websites that allow you to shop from the comfort of your couch! For us at Saltzman’s you can browse our collections and purchase online, or you can pick something out, call us to help you with your purchase and then we will even bring it to you!

If you can’t make it into either of our locations we will arrange to get it to you anywhere in Rhode Island and surrounding areas. I don’t care if you want to buy a Breitling, Movado, Luminox, G-Shock, or Daniel Wellington, if you live in Rhode Island and can’t make it into the store we will bring it to you.

The idea behind #SmallBusinessSaturday is that we support our neighbors and people in our community. So Let’s do that! Come in, call us or shop online! Support your neighbors and small businesses today and all holiday season.

Thank you!! And see you soon!!

Dr. Strange and his not so perfect watch storage sollution

On Friday I went and saw the new MCU movie, Dr. Strange. Aside from being awesome it showed his watch collection and prominently displayed his favorite watch which was a Jaeger-LeCoultre Ultra thin perpetual.

Here’s a picture:

Aside from being a great watch it’s nice to see a wealthy superhero have taste!  He first pulls this watch out at the beginning of the movie from his drawer of watch winders.

My comments here are about his maintenance of his watches and not about his watches themselves (sorry to disappoint you! 🙂 )

For those of you that don’t know what a watch winder is, and why you would need one, let me start with that.  A watch winder is designed for owners of automatic timepieces to keep their watches wound and running properly.  By keeping them wound and running it will lead to a lower chance of unscheduled maintenance and puts less strain on crowns when they need to be unscrewed constantly if the watch is not on a winder and has stopped.

The automatic movement winds when the rotor spins and winds the mainspring and the winder will spin either clockwise or counter clockwise, depending on its setting and brand, which will cause the rotor to spin around.  This works best when the watch is vertical.  Gravity will naturally pull the rotor toward the ground as long as it is moving freely.  The winder will turn thereby winding the watch.  This does not really work as well when the watch is horizontal, like the way Dr. Strange keeps them in his drawer.  If the watch is horizontal, gravity can’t do it’s job and pull the rotor.  Here is a picture of how the Sorcerer Supreme keeps his watches:

Dr. Strange's watch collection drawer

This way of storing his watches is OK from a design standpoint but not ideal.  If you buy a watch winder, and we carry both Wolf Designs and Orbita, you should keep it vertical so you can see the watch and so gravity can do its job and help wind your watch properly.  He should have built a wall safe that looks like this:

Orbita 4 unit in safe

Brilliant character with great taste, but not the most practical person, which now that I think about it, fits his personality!
